In the previous 12 months, 26% of pharmacists and pharmacy employees experienced depression ‘at or as a result of work,’ according to data gathered by Chemist+Druggist’s (C+D) annual Salary Survey.
This shocking statistic is made worse by the fact 39 of the 843 respondents claimed to have experienced suicidal thoughts.
The pressure on our pharmacists’ shoulders is so great that more than half of the survey’s respondents said they’d had “trouble sleeping”, and a further 12% reported they’d been drinking more than usual.
In addition to this, Association of Independent multiple pharmacies (AIMp) chief executive Dr Hannbeck told C+D, “our profession is completely undervalued and receives no recognition” amidst concerns that the increasing pressure will lead aspiring pharmacists to consider different career paths.
