There are two kinds of emergency contraceptive pill. Levonelle has to be taken within 72 hours (three days) of sex, and ellaOne has to be taken within 120 hours (five days) of sex. Both pills work by preventing or delaying ovulation (release of an egg). Emergency contraception is best taken as soon as possible to be most effective.

​Symptoms can start rapidly.  The right anti-malaria tablet is essential to prevent infection.  Avoiding mosquito bites and seeking early medical advice for symptoms are also essential.  No anti-malaria tablet is 100% effective.

​Malaria tablets are normally not supplied through the NHS.  Most travellers who require malaria tablets  will also need to be up to date with travel vaccinations. Please note the service is only available to those who travel abroad, and this vaccination can only be offered to those who it is suitable for, who are travelling to an area where meningitis ACWY is recommended to protect travellers.

The Meningitis ACWY vaccine helps to protect against disease caused by four of the main groups of meningococcal bacteria - A, C, W and Y.  The Meningitis ACWY vaccine is used as a travel vaccine for travellers visiting Saudi Arabia for Hajj or Umrah and those visiting countries with a higher incidence of meningococcal disease, such as parts of Africa and Latin America.
