The HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccine is a safe and highly effective immunization designed to protect against the strains of the virus most commonly linked to various cancers (such as cervical, throat, and anal cancer) and genital warts. It works by stimulating your immune system to produce antibodies.

Here is a quick overview of how the vaccine works:

  • What it prevents: It protects against nine high- and low-risk strains of HPV. It is primarily known as a cancer prevention tool.

  • Who it is for: It is routinely offered to boys and girls around ages 11 to 13 (in Year 8) but is available for eligible individuals up to age 25. Older adults up to 45 may also be eligible depending on their personal risk and history.

  • How it is given: In many regions, including the UK, the schedule typically consists of a single injection. Depending on your age and health status, your doctor may recommend two or three doses.

  • Why it's important: It is most effective when administered before a person becomes sexually active and is exposed to the virus.
