If you have a sore throat, you may not need to wait for a GP appointment. Through the NHS Pharmacy First service, our qualified pharmacists can assess sore throats and, where clinically appropriate, provide NHS treatment, including antibiotics if needed.

This service is available for adults and children aged 5 years and over with symptoms of an acute sore throat.

What happens during your consultation?

During your consultation, one of our pharmacists will:

  • Discuss your symptoms and how long you've had them

  • Assess the severity of your sore throat

  • Review your medical history and any current medication

  • Carry out a clinical assessment to determine the most appropriate treatment

  • Supply NHS medication where clinically appropriate

  • Refer you to your GP or another healthcare service if further assessment is required

Your consultation is private, confidential, and designed to help you receive the right care as quickly as possible.

Common symptoms of a sore throat

You may be suitable for this service if you are experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Pain or discomfort when swallowing

  • A red or inflamed throat

  • Swollen glands in your neck

  • Fever or feeling generally unwell

  • Swollen or white patches on your tonsils

Many sore throats are caused by viral infections and do not require antibiotics. Your pharmacist will assess your symptoms to determine the most appropriate treatment for you.
