Coming down with a sore throat that makes it painful to swallow or talk is a common, but very unpleasant experience. But if you take action as soon as you feel that initial tingle or twinge of pain, you could quickly reduce the severity of your symptoms.

Chances are that you’ve been searching “sore throat remedies” for a little while now, so let us assure you that these 6 remedies are the fastest, most effective ways of relieving your symptoms.

Try these remedies to reduce the inflammation and pain, and if you don’t feel better soon, visit your doctor to get more information.

Honey

For centuries, people have been using honey as a natural remedy for sore throats. It’s one of the best ways to soothe a sore throat, thanks to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

To use honey as a sore throat remedy, just mix one or two teaspoons of it into a cup of warm water or tea. Sip it slowly, so it can coat your throat and give you some relief.

Another great way to use honey is to eat a spoonful of it, or mix it with a teaspoon of cinnamon – which also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Remember, though, that honey isn’t safe for kids under one year old as it increases the risk of botulism.

Salt-Water Gargle

Gargling warm salt-water is a simple but powerful remedy for sore throats. It works by reducing inflammation, and killing harmful bacteria in the throat.

To create your salt-water remedy, simply mix ¼ to ½ teaspoons of salt into a cup of warm water. Then gargle the mixture for about 15-30 seconds, then spit it out – make sure you don’t swallow it!

Repeat this process a few times a day until your symptoms improve.

Remember that while gargling salt-water can help provide temporary relief, most sore throats are caused by a virus (and not bacteria), so it’s not usually a cure for the underlying cause of your sore throat.

Humidity

Dry air can make the throat feel itchy and scratchy, but increasing the moisture in your environment can help soothe it.

There are a few ways to add humidity to your home or office. You can use a humidifier, or you can simply put bowls of water around your space.

Taking a nice, warm shower or bath can also help. The steam from the shower can moisten your throat, and make it feel better – so make sure you breathe in the steam!

Lozenges

Lozenges are a quick, convenient way to get relief from a sore throat and are widely available in most stores.

Lozenges usually have stuff like menthol, eucalyptus or benzocaine, which can help reduce pain and inflammation.

You can find them in different flavours, and some even have extra vitamins to help boost your immune system. Just pop one in your mouth and let it dissolve slowly, and that’s it!

Don’t forget to read the instructions on the package and stick to the recommended dosage, though.

Throat Sprays

If you’re looking for a fast and targeted way to relieve your sore throat, a throat spray may be just what you need. Throat sprays deliver a fine mist of medication straight to the affected area, providing quick relief.

Most throat sprays contain ingredients like benzocaine, menthol, or phenol, which can help numb the pain and soothe your throat.

To use a throat spray, simply shake the bottle well, remove the cap, and hold the spray nozzle close to your throat. Aim towards the back of your mouth, and inhale gently to help the spray reach the back of your throat.

As with the previous suggestion, make sure that you follow the instructions on the packaging and don’t use more than the recommended dose.

Hot Toddy

We’ve saved the most enjoyable (for adults) remedy until last.

A Hot Toddy is a popular home remedy for soothing a sore throat, especially during cold winter months. It’s a warm and comforting drink that can help ease throat pain, and provide some temporary relief.

It’s important to note that as this remedy contains alcohol, it should not be used by underage children, or people that suffer from a history of alcohol abuse.

To make your Hot Toddy, first mix honey with some whisky. Then place a stick of cinnamon in your glass, before topping it up with boiling water and lemon juice.
