Sinusitis (sinus infection) is an infection that makes your sinuses swell up, usually caused by having a cold or the flu.

Sinusitis symptoms

The common symptoms of sinusitis are:

  • Pain around your cheeks, eyes or forehead
  • Blocked and runny nose
  • Green and yellow mucus (snot)
  • Reduced sense of smell
  • A high temperature (fever)
  • Bad breath

How long does sinusitis last?

There are two main forms of sinusitis: acute and chronic.

Acute sinusitis is usually not very serious with symptoms clearing up within a week of developing, but some people may experience them for up to 4 weeks.

Chronic sinusitis can have more severe symptoms, and lasts 12 weeks or more.
