What is spironolactone used for?

Spironolactone is a medication classified as a potassium-sparing diuretic. It is used for various medical conditions to help regulate fluid balance in the body. It is prescribed for conditions such as oedema and high blood pressure.

However, like any medication, it can have side effects. It is important to be aware of the potential side effects of Spironolactone in order to use it safely and effectively.

Common side effects - more than 1 in 100 people

While it’s important to note that not everyone taking spironolactone will experience side effects, these are the most common side effects caused by taking this medication:

  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Muscle or leg cramps
  • Fatigue
  • Breast pain and enlargement (including in men)

Serious side effects

Though they are rare, some people may experience these serious side effects after taking spironolactone.

If you experience any of the following, contact your doctor or call 111 right away:

  • Yellowing of the whites of your eyes or skin (jaundice)
  • Slow or irregular heartbeat, tingling sensation, muscle weakness, or shortness of breath
  • Decreased urine output, dark or strong-smelling urine, excessive thirst, dizziness, or feeling lightheaded
  • Diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting, drowsiness, or confusion
