What is spironolactone used for?

Common side effects - more than 1 in 100 people
While it’s important to note that not everyone taking spironolactone will experience side effects, these are the most common side effects caused by taking this medication:
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Muscle or leg cramps
- Fatigue
- Breast pain and enlargement (including in men)

Serious side effects
Though they are rare, some people may experience these serious side effects after taking spironolactone.

- Yellowing of the whites of your eyes or skin (jaundice)
- Slow or irregular heartbeat, tingling sensation, muscle weakness, or shortness of breath
- Decreased urine output, dark or strong-smelling urine, excessive thirst, dizziness, or feeling lightheaded
- Diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting, drowsiness, or confusion
