What are Skin Tags?

Skin tags are small, benign growths that often appear on the skin’s surface. They can occur on any part of the body, but are most commonly found in areas where skin rubs against skin or clothing. Skin tags are harmless and do not usually cause pain or discomfort, but they can be cosmetically bothersome to some individuals.

What Do Skin Tags Look Like?

Skin tags typically look like small, soft, fleshy bumps or growths on the skin. They are often flesh-coloured or slightly darker and have a narrow stalk that attaches them to the skin.

Is It a Skin Tag?

If you have a growth on your skin that meets the following criteria, it is is likely a skin tag:

  • Small in size (normally just a few millimetres wide)
  • Skin-coloured or slightly darker
  • Soft to the touch and has a smooth texture
  • Generally does not cause pain or discomfort
  • Hangs off the skin

What Causes Skin Tags?

The exact cause of skin tags is not fully understood, though there are some known risk factors associated with their development.

They tend to occur in areas where the skin experiences friction or rubbing, and are more common in older people, those with type 2 diabetes, and people who are obese.

Can I Remove My Skin Tag at Home?

Skin tags should not be removed without consulting a medical professional first. Removal can cause heavy bleeding and scarring, depending on the size of the tag.

Make an appointment with your GP to have your skin tag(s) evaluated and removed safely.
