What is Aspirin?

Aspirin, also known as acetylsalicylic acid, is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

It can be found in various forms including pills, soluble tablets and oral gels.

What is it used for?

Aspirin is an everyday painkiller that is used to treat many conditions, and can also alleviate symptoms like discomfort and inflammation. 

Some of the conditions it can be used to treat, include: 

  • Headaches and migraines
  • Menstrual cramps and other menstrual-related pain
  • Muscles aches and soreness
  • Common cold and flu

Who Can and Can't Use It?

While most people can safely use aspirin, it isn’t suitable for everyone. Before you take it, check the list below to make sure it’s safe for you!

Do not take aspirin (or consult your doctor first), if: 

  • You are under the age of 16 (unless your doctor has already prescribed it)
  • You have ever had an allergic reaction to aspirin or another NSAID, like ibuprofen
  • You have ever had a stomach ulcer
  • You are pregnant

How Long Does It Take to Work?

According to the NHS, aspirin should take between 15-20 minutes to start making you feel better.

What Are the Side Effects?

Like with most medications, taking aspirin comes with potential side effects. These range in severity from mild to severe, which we’ll show below: 

Mild side effects: 

  • Mild indigestion
  • Upset stomach
  • Bleeding & bruising easier than usual


Severe side effects: 

You should call your doctor or phone 111 immediately if you’re currently experiencing these side effects:  

  • You have coughed up blood
  • You’ve noticed blood in your urine, stool or vomit
  • Your joints are hurting
  • Your hands or feet are swollen
