Glaucoma is a common eye condition. It happens when the pressure inside your eye goes up, causing damage to the optic nerve.

Over time, glaucoma can damage your peripheral vision, and if not caught early, it may even lead to loss of central vision. That’s why getting regular eye check-ups is crucial.

Risk Factors of Glaucoma

Certain things may increase your risk of getting glaucoma:

  • Age: Your risk of developing glaucoma increases as you get older

  • Family: You are at increased risk of developing glaucoma if it tends to run in your family

  • Ethnicity: People of African, Caribbean or Asian heritage are more likely to develop glaucoma

Also, if your eye pressure is higher than normal, it’s a risk factor.

Symptoms of Glaucoma

Glaucoma often doesn’t show early signs. Sometimes, you might not even know you have it until it’s quite advanced. Regular eye check-ups can help catch it early.

In some cases, glaucoma can develop very quickly and cause symptoms like:

  • Eye pain
  • Feeling or being sick
  • Tenderness around the eyes
  • Blurred vision
  • Seeing rings when looking at sources of light
