Tegretol, also called carbamazepine, is a medication that falls into the anticonvulsant category.

The active ingredient, carbamazepine, works by calming down overactive nerve cells, not only preventing seizures but also easing nerve pain and improving mood stability.

It is often prescribed to treat the following conditions:

Epilepsy

Tegretol is widely prescribed for its ability to help control and prevent epileptic seizures. By stabilising electrical activity in the brain, it helps mitigate the abnormal signals responsible for different types of seizures.

Its effectiveness extends over various types of seizure, including both focal (affecting one half of the brain) and generalised (both halves of the brain) seizures.

Nerve Pain

Tegretol plays a crucial role in managing neuropathic pain conditions by modulating nerve cell activity. This includes conditions like trigeminal neuralgia (a sudden, severe face pain) and peripheral neuropathy (caused by diabetes).

Bipolar Disorder

Tegretol is also sometimes prescribed as a medication for bipolar disorder, when other medications haven’t worked.

It helps regulate and stabilise mood fluctuations, which are one of the main symptoms of bipolar disorder (manic and depressive episodes).

Common Side Effects - more than 1 in 100 people

Like with any medication, taking tegretol can cause unwanted side effects. These are usually mild and tend to go away by themselves, but if they continue to bother you, consult your GP or pharmacist for further advice.

These include:

  • Dry mouth (cottonmouth)
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headaches
  • Weight gain
  • Sleepiness, dizziness, and fatigue
