Period Pain

(Also known as dysmenorrhoea)

Period pain is a common condition experienced by many women. It can range from mild to severe, and is typically caused by cramps.

You might have period pain if you have:

Painful cramps in your belly
Sharp or dull pain in your belly
Pain or discomfort before or during your period
  • Your womb contracts to remove the uterine lining
  • Higher prostaglandin levels, prompting contractions
  • Narrowing of the cervix, causing stronger cramps
  • Conditions such as endometriosis or fibroids
  • Cramping or dull, throbbing pain in the lower abdomen
  • Pain that radiates to the lower back and thighs
  • Bloating or feeling of fullness in the abdomen
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea in severe cases
  • Have a relaxing bath or shower
  • Use over-the-counter painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol 
  • Apply heat to the abdomen with a heating pad or warm compress
  • Consider using a contraceptive that thins the lining of your womb
