What is Pharmacy First?

Pharmacy First is a new NHS-funded scheme that helps you get the treatment you need without seeing a GP.

The scheme aims to make pharmacies your first port-of-call for common conditions to help lessen the strain on GP surgeries, which has seen waiting times for doctor’s appointments sky rocket over the last few years.

What conditions are covered by Pharmacy First?

With Pharmacy First only recently being released for patients living in England, the conditions covered by the scheme are currently different depending on where you live in the UK.

For patients living in England:

  • Sore throat
  • Sinusitis
  • Shingles
  • Impetigo
  • UTIs
  • Infected insect bites
  • Ear infections (in-branch only)

For patients living in Scotland:

  • Acne
  • Allergies
  • Athlete’s foot
  • Backache
  • Blocked or runny nose
  • Cold sores
  • Constipation
  • Cough
  • Cystitis (in women)
  • Diarrhoea
  • Earache
  • Eczema
  • Headache
  • Head lice

Do I need to pay for my consultation?

No, your video consultation with the pharmacist will be free of charge. The pharmacy will receive payment directly from the NHS.

Do I need to pay for my medication?

Yes, if you normally pay for your prescriptions, then you’ll need to pay the usual rate of £9.65 per item you’re prescribed. 

If you are exempt from paying for your prescription, then your medication will be free of charge.
