What is Adalimumab?

Adalimumab is a monoclonal antibody, which is used to reduce inflammation for a variety of conditions. It is classified as a biological medicine, meaning that it’s made from substances already produced by the body. 

It is more commonly known by its brand name Humira, and is injected into the body.

What is Adalimumab Used For?

Like with taking any medication, taking adalimumab can cause unwanted side effects in the people taking it. Though these are usually mild and tend to go away after a short period of time, it’s important that you consult your doctor or pharmacist should they persist or make you too uncomfortable. 

These side effects include: 

  • Pain and swelling where the injection was given
  • Headaches
  • Stomach aches
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Muscle & bone pain

Serious Side Effects - less than 1 in 100 people - call 111 now

While serious side effects are rare and affect less than 1 in 100, they can be indicative of a severe underlying problem.

If you’re experiencing any of the following side effects, you should speak to your doctor or call 111 as soon as possible: 

  • Severe Infection: infections with symptoms like high temperature, chills, increased sweating, fatigue, diarrhoea, coughing up blood or mucus, difficulty breathing, urinary problems, skin sores, wounds, or muscle pain
  • Heart Failure: shortness of breath or swelling in ankles/feet
  • Cancer: night sweats, swollen lymph nodes in various body areas, weight loss, skin changes (like lumps or sores), or unexplained severe itchiness
  • Nervous System Issues: numbness, tingling, vision changes, muscle weakness, or unexplained dizziness
  • Blood Disorders: persistent high temperature, easy bruising, or excessive bleeding
