What is Flecainide Used For?

Flecainide belongs to a group of medications called antiarrhythmics, these are designed to slow the nerve pulses in the heart and can help correct or lessen the symptoms of an abnormally fast irregular heartbeat:

Side Effects of Taking Flecainide

As with any medication, taking flecainide can lead to various side effects.

While most people can take this medicine safely, it’s important to be aware of the potential side effects so that you can remain safe.

It’s important to note that the following is not a full list of side effects for flecainide, to see more please check the leaflet inside your medicine packaging.

The most common side effects are:

  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhoea
  • Headaches
 
These side effects are usually temporary, but if they persist and continue to bother you it is important that you speak with your GP or pharmacist for further guidance.

Other side effects can include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pains
  • Skin irritation

If you’re experiencing these side effects it’s important that you stop taking the medicine immediately and get medical advice by phoning 111 or in case of emergency 999.

Foods to Avoid When Taking Flecainide

There are certain foods that you should avoid or only eat in moderation if you’re taking flecainide as these can counteract and limit the effects of the medication.

Foods high in saturated fat can increase blood pressure and cholesterol:

  • Lamb
  • Pork
  • Beef
  • Dairy products
  • Fried food

Foods high in sodium can increase blood pressure:

  • Deli meats
  • Salty snacks (crisps, pretzels etc)
  • Fast food
  • Canned foods

Foods and drinks high in caffeine can worsen an arrhythmia: 

  • Coffee
  • Energy drinks
  • Tea
  • Fizzy drinks with added caffeine (coca cola, pepsi etc)

Eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice should also be avoided as grapefruit can actually increase the levels of medicine in your blood.
