Crohn’s disease is a life-long inflammatory bowel disease (IBS) that affects more than 540,000 people in the UK, meaning that roughly 1 in 123 people are suffering from either Crohn’s or Colitis.

People with Crohn’s will go through periods of remission, where the symptoms may seem like they’ve eased off, before a “flare-up” kicks the symptoms off again.

These flare-up symptoms often include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhoea
  • Tiredness
  • Weight loss

Causes of Crohn’s Disease

While the exact cause isn’t entirely understood, there are several factors that are believed to play a part, including:

  • Genetics – you’re more likely to get it if a family member has it
  • Problems with your immune system
  • Smoking
  • Abnormal balance of bacteria in your gut
  • Previous stomach bug

Living with Crohn’s Disease

The unpredictable nature of the condition, along with potential stigma, can lead to isolation and emotional distress. However, with proper support and self-care, individuals can better navigate these challenges and work towards a fulfilling life.

Changing aspects of your lifestyle along with taking an appropriate medication can help ease the symptoms of Crohn’s flare-ups.

Treatment for Crohn’s Disease

Managing Crohn’s disease requires a multifaceted approach that involves medical professionals, medications, lifestyle adjustments, and sometimes surgical interventions. The primary goal is to alleviate symptoms, reduce inflammation, and achieve long-term remission.

Medications:

  • Aminosalicylates
  • Corticosteroids like prednisolone
  • Immunosuppressants
  • Biologics

Lifestyle Changes:

  • Diet Modifications
  • Stress Management
  • Regular Exercise

Surgical Interventions:

In cases of complications or when medications are ineffective, surgery might be necessary to remove affected portions of the intestine, treat strictures, or manage fistulas.

Surgery aims to improve quality of life and reduce the need for ongoing medication.
