Sinusitis

(Commonly known as sinus infection)

Sinusitis is when your sinuses swell up, usually due to an infection. It’s very common and typically happens after a cold or flu. Though it tends to go away on its own within 4 weeks, medicines can be used to help lessen the symptoms.

You might have sinusitis if you have:

Pain around your cheeks, eyes or forehead
A blocked and runny nose

A high temperature of 38C or more

  • The common cold
  • The flu (influenza)
  • Nasal and seasonal allergies
  • Certain bacterias (less common)
  • Pain around your cheeks, eyes or forehead

  • Reduced sense of smell
  • A high temperature (fever)
  • Bad breath
  • Get plenty of rest
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Use a salt water nasal spray
  • Take low strength painkillers (paracetamol or ibuprofen)
  • Avoid things that trigger your allergies
