What is Chickenpox?

Chickenpox is a highly contagious infection that causes a rash of small, itchy blisters that spread over the body. It can cause serious complications in some people, but typically it’ll get better within 1-2 weeks without seeing a GP.

Symptoms of Chickenpox

The symptoms of chickenpox usually appear 10 to 21 days after exposure to the virus.

The main symptom of chickenpox is a red, itchy rash that develops into small, fluid-filled blisters. The blisters will eventually burst and form scabs, which will then fall off after a few days. During this time, new blisters may continue to appear, and the person may feel very itchy and uncomfortable.

Other symptoms may appear a day or two before the rash:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Aches and pains

Causes of Chickenpox

Chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is highly contagious and can be easily spread from person to person through direct contact with the fluid from the blisters or when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus can also be transmitted indirectly through contact with objects or surfaces contaminated with the virus.

How to Prevent & Treat Chickenpox

Chickenpox can be prevented through vaccination, which is recommended for all children, adolescents, and adults who have not previously been vaccinated or who have not had the disease.

While there’s no cure for chickenpox, there are medications that can help alleviate the symptoms. These may include painkillers paracetamol, to help with the pain and discomfort caused by the rash, as well as cooling gels and antihistamines to help ease itching.
