How Does Citalopram Make You Feel at First?

Citalopram belongs to a class of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and is commonly prescribed to treat various mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety and panic disorder.

If you’re just starting out on your journey with citalopram, it’s important to understand that taking an antidepressant typically takes a few weeks before positive effects can be noticed. In fact, the initial side effects can leave you feeling worse than before you started to take the medication.

However, if this is the case, you should continue to take your medicine as prescribed and if you’re feeling particularly uncomfortable, speak to your GP who may recommend another antidepressant medication.

The NHS suggests giving citalopram at least 6 weeks to begin working properly, meaning that you are receiving the positive effects of taking it.

Potential Side Effects of Citalopram

Like with taking any medications, while many people are able to take citalopram with no side effects, some people may experience adverse side effects in the first few weeks of taking it.

These include:

  • Weight loss or gain for no reason
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Reduced sex drive
  • Drowsiness
  • Sweating
  • Headaches
  • Nausea (feeling or being sick)

These side effects will usually only last a short amount of time, while your body is getting used to the citalopram. But if they continue to bother you, speak with your GP for further medical guidance.
