Thrush

Thrush is a common yeast infection that usually affects the genital area, particularly in women, although it can occur in men as well.

You have might have thrush if you have:

Itching or irritation around your vagina or penis
White, thick discharge resembling cottage cheese
Burning sensation when you wee
  • Overgrowth of candida bacteria, which is normally harmless
  • Weakened immune system due to factors such as hormonal changes, antibiotic use, or poorly managed diabetes
  • Sex, although less common, can also cause thrush

Symptoms of thrush in women:

  • Itching, burning sensation, or soreness in the vagina and surrounding area
  • White, thick discharge, typically without an odour
  • Redness, swelling, or irritation of the vaginal tissue
  • Pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse or urination

 

Symptoms of thrush in men:

  • Itching, burning sensation, or soreness around the tip of the penis
  • Redness, swelling, or irritation of the penis
  • A white, thick discharge
  • A bad smell
  • Don’t use perfumed soaps, douches, or scented sanitary products
  • Make sure you dry yourself fully after washing
  • Wear cotton underwear and avoiding tight-fitting clothing
  • Avoid having sex until your thrush has cleared up
