Registering with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)

Step-by-step guidance on registering with the GPhC and staying compliant as a pharmacist or pharmacy technician

What Is the GPhC?

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) is the regulatory body responsible for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and registered pharmacy premises in Great Britain. Its primary role is to ensure safe, effective, and high-quality pharmacy services by setting standards and maintaining a public register.

If you want to practise as a pharmacist or pharmacy technician in the UK, registration with the GPhC is a legal requirement.

Below, we’ll show you how to register with the GPhC, and what happens if you forget to renew.

Registering as a Pharmacist

If you’re about to complete your foundation training year, you’ll need to follow these steps to join the GPhC register:

  • Pass the GPhC registration assessment: This exam tests your readiness to practise safely and effectively.
  • Upload your qualifications: You must submit proof of your accredited MPharm degree and completion of the foundation training year.
  • Provide a health declaration: You’ll need to confirm that you are fit to practise and free from any health conditions that could affect your work.
  • Submit a character reference: This is typically provided by a registered healthcare professional or academic referee.
  • Pay the registration fee: This is required to complete the process.

Registering as a Pharmacy Technician

If you’re applying to register as a pharmacy technician, you’ll need to:

  • Complete an approved qualification: Usually an NVQ Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians.
  • Submit your application: This includes evidence of your qualification and relevant work experience.
  • Pay the registration fee: This activates your professional registration.

Maintaining Your Registration

Once registered, you must keep your registration up to date every year. This involves:

  • Paying your annual renewal fee.
  • Completing at least four CPD (Continuing Professional Development) records annually.
  • Submitting one peer discussion record.
  • Submitting one reflective account record.

These requirements ensure you remain fit to practise and up to date with professional standards.

What Happens If You Don’t Renew?

If you miss your renewal deadline, your name will be removed from the GPhC register. This means you’ll no longer be legally allowed to work as a pharmacist or pharmacy technician. You’ll have to reapply and go through the restoration process before you can return to practice.

Final Thoughts

Registering with the GPhC is a vital part of working as a pharmacist or technician in the UK. It ensures you meet the standards required to provide safe and effective care, and it gives patients confidence in the services you offer. Whether you’re preparing to register for the first time or keeping your registration active, understanding the process helps you stay compliant and focused on your professional growth.
